This is already our second Friday the 13th this year - and I think I've heard there's another one coming in 2009, though I haven't checked. Maybe with all that, we should have known there was an economic crash coming?
In spite of all the bad news this year, though, "unlucky" Friday, March 13 actually brings us some good news. No, I don't mean just that the stock market is up a bit this week. That IS good news, but it's important not to get too excited about it just yet, it's too early. Things could be right back down the tubes by Monday. And I'm not referring to the fact that I pretty well finished up my taxes today and might look forward to a refund, though that's not bad news, either.
More than that - I was cheered by the Michelle Obama interview on ABC, particularly the parts regarding her decision to be an advocate for the plight of military families. This will be an excellent and positive role for the First Lady (probably not her only one, if I judge her rightly.) In fact, the various ways people have thought of to help our Afghanistan and Iraq vets are truly amazing. One that I find interesting, and very worthwhile, is Segs4Vets" a program aimed at providing those Segway "people-transporters" to enhance the mobility of disabled veterans. Most generations of American men (and now women too) have "their" war - mine was Viet Nam, and I recall how I never worried much about coming home in a box; my greater fear was to end up incapacitated. I didn't, but I have a deep empathy for those who did.
Even more inspiring, I think, was a report on ABC this evening about an interesting project called "Wish Upon A Hero" - a simple but really effective concept - have a look, I think it will make you want to get involved.
