Every so often I find a book I like well enough for a quick plug here, even if it is not connected to some subject matter I'm writing about. American Rust, by Philipp Meyer, is one such. Not too long ago I read a mention of it somewhere. It's a first novel, so it's not without a few minor faults, but I was impressed by its exploration of issues of guilt, friendship, and family ties, set against the realistic background of a western Pennsylvania town decaying because its main economic engine, a large factory, has closed.
