I was favorably impressed by today's commentary by Matt Miller: Can Chris Christie Handle The Truth?
This op-ed piece is largely devoted to constrasting the various statements of "the truth about our budget" as formulated by several different Republican politicians (Christie, Ryan, Palin), with the conclusion that none of them is confronting reality, only their individual perceptions of it. Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana gets a slight nod as "the closest thing to a GOP truth-teller."
But Miller also points out, as I believe I may have myself at some point in the past, that the key to political courage (from which sprouts bipartisanship!) is to be able to tell one's political allies, the so-called "core," truths that they don't want to hear. It's a rare quality -- if Mitch Daniels has it, so of late does Obama -- but one that we'll need to have a lot more of to break the logjam preventing us from attacking our real problems.
