We had some glimmer of hope, in Virginia last year, that the gerrymandering of state electoral districts might be modified, if not stopped entirely. No such luck; the Governor's commission was designed to be weak, and its recommendations were ignored. Another case where a state government seems bent on giving state government a bad name!
In the new assembly that was seated last month, the state's upper house ended up evenly split, 20-20. This situation has led to another glimmer of hope. As the Washington Post correctly points out, gerrymandering safe districts not only subverts real democracy, but contributes significantly to the polarization that we see everywhere about us.
